Farewell Sweet Rose

Yesterday was a sad day at our home. The girls were let out early to free range and they had a big time. A few hours later when it was time to go back to the coop, Rose and Dorothy were no where to be found. After searching the property and the barn, Josh finally came upon Dorothy who had settled into a spot behind the barn in some tall grass. She was just relaxing. Still watching for Rose, he guided Dorothy back to the coop. Just a few feet away he happened to glance down and saw Rose laying in some tall grass. It looked like she just sat down and didn't wake up. Thankfully nothing had gotten after her, although we aren't sure what happened. After researching and talking to some others, our best guess is that she may have gotten into something. Joshua gave her a very sweet burial. He tucked her into a Whole Foods bag with the writing "Rose Holcomb. You will be missed." She lays behind the garage, facing the coop. We are so sad. It's been very difficult. The other girls miss her too. She was their family, a part of their flock. They have been very quiet and have stayed in the coop more than usual. We are sad that Rose isn't with us but we are thankful that we had the short time with her that we did. She brought us great joy.
Rose had a personality very similar to "Rose" from the Golden Girls. In fact, we named her Rose because of her behavior. She was very silly acting and very adventurous. She was the first of the girls to venture out of the coop and the furthest away. She would let you pet her while she scratched and pecked. She is the one who we think laid the first egg. She would come towards you when you came outside. She was very sweet. We are thankful for our short time with our sweet and silly Rose. Here she is, enjoying her day.
R.I.P our sweet Rose Holcomb
