Our Estelle

We took this pic of our sweet girl on Sunday when we got home from church. Every time that garage door comes up, Estelle comes running over to greet us (aka....get some food- she's smart, she knows where it's at!) We have loved Estelle so much. You might remember her as being the one that Josh had to literally pick up and move almost EVERY SINGLE DAY for a while when she wanted to sit in the laying box and none of the other girls could lay. Or when she was sitting on Blanche and trying to "steal" her baby chicks that were under her. Or that she is the only one who will eat feed out of the frying pan, allow us to pet her, pick her up and will sometimes be standing on the door stoop like she wants to come inside. She was independent. Almost always on her own. A leader. She was always the first girl heading out in the mornings. She was content to be by herself. She brought us an enormous amount of joy. Some may wonder how a chicken can do that. Let me tell you, our girls are special. They each have their own personality and when you care for them every day and love them, they are no different than other furry pets except they don't live in our houses or snuggle up with us in bed. Our girls are our pets just like our pups. They are a part of our family. Some of our best times living here has been sitting outside, watching the Girls get some grub, chase the lawn mower, take out a worm (or preying mantis, as Estelle did one day) and mess up our landscaping. They bring joy. They're our girls. Sadly, our family is now one girl short. Later Sunday evening, we lost Estelle. She'd been hit by a car. It was pretty traumatic and violent. We are sure she didn't suffer. But we are grieving her. It is heart breaking. She is now buried beside Rose, keeping a close eye on the other girls and the coop. We miss seeing her out so much. Tonight, I sat outside and watched the other Girls. We think they miss her too. They have spent more time in the coop than normal during the day. They did this for a few days after Rose passed too. I think they grieve their own. Despite how sad we are, Estelle left us with only great stories, love and a lot of joy. Here are some of our favorite pics.

You will definitely be missed beautiful girl.
